I mentioned last month that trading the opening gap on the first day of the month has a low probability of success. How right I was to be cautious today.

Building upon our extensive experience of fading the opening gap using our automated trading system, we have launched today a system to perform detailed analysis on opening gaps.

It was going to be difficult to trade opening gaps today, as the gaps in our regular trading instruments were so big.

Our mnGapAutotrader has not had a great month so far when trading the opening gap with the main index futures. As often happens, just when you feel like using a different instrument along comes a trade like the one with Nasdaq today.

Previous research has indicated that opening gaps on index futures have a poor chance of filling on the first of the month. Our live trading results supports this view.
